Each Sunday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church worshipers are welcomed with the words "Wherever you are on your journey, you are welcome at Gloria Dei."  After a devastating fire which destroyed a large portion of Gloria Dei's beloved building, the congregation recommitted itself to the Duluth Hillside neighborhood.  With the strong support of community members, the fire-damaged portions of the building were restored and reconfigured to represent the congregation's commitment to serving its Hillside neighbors, embracing a vision for God's mission that gathers together people wonderfully diverse in age, race, ability, background and experience.  When CHUM offered Gloria Dei the opportunity to partner with homeless shelter staff to open its doors to provide a warm, safe space for its neighbors in the renovated Hillside Room on overly cold nights, the Gloria Dei Warming Center was born.

Gloria Dei's renovated building has up-to-date sprinkler, fire safety systems and ventilation which allowed guests to sleep overnight.  This was an improvement from the previous venue.  From November 2019 until February, 2020, the Warming Center was open when the overnight temperature was predicted to be 10 degrees or lower.  From February through March, 2020, the Warming Center was open daily from 8:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays) until 8:00 a.m. (7:00 a.m. on Sundays) through March 31, 2020.  Guests were also able to connect with needed resources during Warming Center hours.

CHUM Duluth coordinated the Warming Center and provided paid CHUM staff to operate the center overnight.  Gloria Dei coordinated the volunteers asked to assist CHUM staff in the evenings and mornings to provide hospitality to guests and assist with setting up and closing.

2020-2021 Winter Season Update

Due to COVID-19, CHUM Duluth is planning alternate venues which can allow for greater social distancing for guest, staff and volunteer safety.  A Gloria Dei Warming Center Policy Committee is planning for the event that CHUM's plans fall through and we are asked to share our resources again this season.

For those interested in assisting our homeless neighbors this winter season, there is a nearly constant call for tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, hand and foot warmers, commercially packaged healthy snacks, masks, socks and winter outerwear.  Items can be dropped off at the CHUM Drop-In Center at 120 N. 1st Avenue West.
