GLORIA DEI SOFTBALL - "Gloria Dei Dreamers" team
Paul Steklenski had a great idea (one of many). Gloria Dei should field a softball team in the YMCA summer church league. So Paul rounded up some players and we were off! Part of the fun of this league is the fun of playing together. Each team in the league was to have had people of all ages and both men and women. Playing for Gloria Dei this season (in no particular order which is pretty much how we played) were: Sue Anderson, Paul Steklenski, Gary Olson, Ken and Lubov Willms, Andy Switzer and his friend Jayme, Tim Houbaugh, Wayne and JoAnn McCall, Pastor Dave, Tanner Hall, Marita, Maia and Steve Dalager, Tom Uecker, Patti Maguire, David Danielson, Neil and Cara Weberg, Steve O'Neil, Ben Small, Tim Wright (our walk on 82 year old pitcher) and Carol Uecker (assistant manager).
We won only two games but maybe more was won as time and again we heard, "I was cheering for your team because you laughed and had fun." Or "Thanks for the fun game tonight. We really enjoyed playing you." The spirit of Gloria Dei shone on the field through the rusty skills and aching bodies. There was one game where we were sub running for three players. Ken Willms sustained a bone bruise from a line drive and Tom Uecker nursed more than one bruise on his right hand through the thin 50 year old glove he used. The first games saw a piece of the sanctuary carpet rolled out in the dug out to be certain our feet remained firmly planted in the "Lutheran tradition". Team members teased and supported one another through losses and cheered at small victories like two double plays in one game or a 1-2-3 inning for Tim W. or the long fly ball catches from Pastor Dave. We had a good time....this is most certainly true!
A huge thank you to Paul for organizing this and to Linda Kalweit, the most faithful of cheerleaders. This is something we should do again. Please join us next season!

(Posted beginning of 2008 season) DEI DREAMERS - SOFTBALL - The end of March is opening day for the Twins. While the Dei Dreamers are a little behind that schedule, we are preparing for opening day of summer church league softball. Already we have had one coffee hour fund raiser and another is planned. There is a fee to register a team for the league and we hope to defray some costs to players by using coffee hour to help us pay some fees.

Last years players are encouraged to be thinking about this season. We need youth, young adults, veteran (mid-life) and senior players (62 years +). We need both men and women but when the rule keepers count prior to the game, women, seniors and youth are the categories for which they scan. This is serious “non-competitive” and fun softball! Paul Steklenski returns as coach and Carol Uecker returns as organizer. To that end, if you want to have some fun on the field, please contact either Carol (cruecker1@msn.com) or Paul (psteklenski@q.com).  Both Carol and Paul have been recruiting at coffee hours and the season looks great with some old and some new players indicating interest.
